As the premier sports section in the club, the Bahrain RFC 1st XV Squad has enjoyed great success since its formation in the early 1970s.

Haivng established themselves as the standard-bearers in the early years of Gulf competitions, Bahrain continued to dominate up until the late 1990s and can proudly stand by the richest history of any of the clubs around the region, despite the unprecedented growth and development of the UAE sides over the last 15 years.

The demise of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union (AGRFU) in 2010 coupled with an ever-increasing number of clubs popping up has meant constant reshuffling of the structure of seasonal competitions in recent years.

For the 2012-2013 campaign, Bahrain’s first XV squad is competing against some of its oldest rivals; Doha, Muscat and Kuwait, in the Gulf Conference from September through to December and will be out to secure one of the two spots in that competition, to ensure qualification for the Gulf Top Six against the four best teams from the UAE Premiership in the new year.

The team trains on Monday and Wednesday nights from 7.30pm at the club under the guidance of former Hong Kong Sevens team coach Jim Rowark, now in his fifth year with Bahrain.

For those players who aren`t so competitive and don`t necessarily wish to compete week-in and week-out, the club boasts two social sides in the form of the Golden Oldies (over 35s) and Firbolgs (second team). These two teams also get regular fixtures against visiting Navy Teams, in inter-club matches and other matches as well as particpating annually at the Dubai Sevens.

Bahrain RFC is known the region-over (and indeed further afield) for its hospitality and there is no better time to visit the club than during a first XV home game played out in front of the legendary loyal and vociferous home support.

Familiar feeling for first XV

There was a disappointingly familiar atmosphere around Bahrain RFC on Friday evening, after the club’s first XV lost a fourth successive game in the Gulf Top Six.
